Impact Stories
After enduring multiple losses, sexual violence, and severe depression, a 25-year-old survivor from Ifelodun Local Government found hope through psychosocial support and counselling. Her story is a powerful reminder that compassionate care can save lives and restore hope.

There was a time when she no longer saw a future for herself.
At 25, the weight of grief, trauma, and repeated violence had become almost impossible to bear.
Living in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, she had gone through multiple traumatic experiences that gradually affected her mental and emotional wellbeing. Over the years, she lost her mother, her brother, and later, her boyfriend. Each loss came with grief she struggled to process.
Beyond these losses, she also survived sexual violence. She was raped by her uncle, someone who should have protected her, and later assaulted by her employer. These experiences left her carrying intense emotional pain, fear, and trauma.
With time, the weight of everything she had been through began to affect every part of her life.
She became withdrawn and struggled with persistent sadness, hopelessness, and emotional exhaustion. Sleep became difficult, and painful memories of her experiences continued to resurface. There were moments when the pain felt unbearable, and she began having thoughts of ending her life.
When she was referred for psychosocial support, she was in a deeply vulnerable state and in urgent need of care.
Through counselling sessions and psychological support, she was given a safe space to talk about experiences she had kept buried for years. For the first time in a long while, she felt able to speak openly about her grief, trauma, and emotional struggles.
With continuous support from a psychologist, she began to better understand the impact of trauma and depression on her mental health. She learned coping strategies to manage anxiety, process painful memories, and respond differently to emotional triggers.
Her healing has been gradual.
There have been difficult days, but there has also been progress.
Today, she is emotionally more stable and better able to cope with the challenges around her. The suicidal thoughts that once overwhelmed her have reduced significantly, and she is beginning to rebuild hope for the future.
Her story reminds us that timely psychosocial support can save lives. When survivors have access to safe spaces and compassionate care, healing becomes possible.
